The Donnys find a fortune with their catchy indie sound

Spilling your beer in Newmarket could either leave you being mocked, or spawn one of the catchiest band name's in the Ontario music scene today.

"If you're at a party and someone spills their beer, you just say, like, 'fucking Donny'," says Marco Luciano, drummer of The Donnys. Starting in 2013, The Donnys are an indie rock band with a strong jazz influence from Newmarket Ontario. Consisting of singer Jake Wilkinson, guitarist Zack Reynolds, bassist Derek Braithwaite and drummer Marco Luciano, The Donnys have crafted a sound that stays in the realm of indie rock but still manages to distance themselves from the rest of the scene.

"I think what makes our sound so unique and different is that we all have so many different influences. We all listen to anything and everything. I for example play in an orchestra, so that's where a lot of influence comes for different percussion. We get these catchy riffs and cool guitar chords is the jazz influence. All of us also listen to a lot of indie rock like Vampire Weekend, so I think our sound is indie rock meets jazz. If you listen to a lot of bands from Newmarket they all kind of match that unique sound," says Luciano.

The Donnys previously released their "Fortune/Hot River" EP in January and supported that release with lots of shows in Ontario until recently while they've been working on their new EP. "The singles sound really great but these recordings sound so amazing, and you can really just here the maturity as a band," says Luciano regarding the new songs.

Luciano explains the recording process for the EP, saying "We went to this place called Riverworks Studios over on Queen Street East in Toronto with our producer, Mike Rocha, who's produced for bands like Electric Youth and a whole bunch of other guys. Our engineer was Mike Fong and they both are just really smart guys. We recorded our two songs "Fortune" and "Hot River" with them for our previous EP, so we've known them for pretty close to a year now."

Working in the music business since 2004, Mike Rocha currently produces and engineers bands at Riverworks such as Electric Youth, Black Pistol Fire and Greys.

"It's interesting because Jake, our singer, loved this band called Bare Claws, from Newmarket, and the bassist (Mike Fong) did the engineering for that as well. He works with Mike Rocha and Jake has been listening to that album for years and he thought the sound of it was amazing. One night he showed me these recordings and the first thing that got me was how amazing the drums sounded and everything and how clear everything was. I said right away that I would love to record with whoever this is, so we managed to get in contact with them and now were working with the bassist of Bare Claws which is really cool."

The Donnys really show how hard they work at their music with the process of how they have been recording their new EP. After recording the Hot River/Fortune EP, they sent the songs off to Factor, a Canadian company dedicated to helping artists record new material, and won a grant for $1500 to record along with funds from their last EP and the band themselves.

The Donnys plan to keep up the excitement with hopes to release a music video for the EP along with upcoming shows. Their new EP is set to be released sometime in May.
